Garden Grove Haulage
Customer Success: Garden Grove
Background
With a fleet in excess of 100 vehicles, Garden Grove needed to find an efficient system that would improve driver safety and further improve their high level of customer service.
Challenge
Alicia Critchley, Accounts Manager for Garden Grove, says what led the company to telematics in the first place was the ability to get a better sense of where the trucks were at all times.
‘By doing this we would be able to provide answers on how long it might take untill our vehicle would arrive, while eliminating the time wasted calling back and forth between the driver and the customer,’ she says.

Solution
The Rollout
After initially fitting only 10 haul trucks with a Fleet Complete Fleet Tracking device and letting them run for a 6 month period, Garden Grove have now fitted their entire fleet of 120.
“We are now able to update our customers on stops made by the driver, schedule routes, arrival and departure times, without having to interrupt the driver on the road. It has also enabled us to provide feedback to customer enquiries on historical trips, like being able to verify, without doubt, exactly which location a particular load has been delivered to, which is very important to large customers with multiple delivery locations.”
– Alicia Critchley
Training
To enable themselves to get the most out of the solution, Garden Grove have utilised a variety of the different training services offered by Fleet Complete.
‘We have been able to use the Free Webinars as a great refresher, or induction for new staff, while the customised one-on-one sessions have enabled us to learn more about the software’ said Critchley.
Broader knowledge of the software has encouraged Garden Grove to explore areas such as automated vehicle maintenance as a potential to increase business efficiency within the company.
The Results
Greater Level of Customer Satisfaction
Since the implementation of the Fleet Complete Fleet Management Solution, Garden Grove have been able to significantly improve the quality of information being provided to their clients, while reducing the amount of time handling customer enquiries.
Improved Driver Safety and Behaviour
From a WH&S point of view, the solution has proved an invaluable tool for the company.
‘With up to a 100 drivers on the road at any one time, it can be difficult to ensure the safety of our drivers. Using the solution we have setup a big screen in our transport office which shows live tracking of all our vehicles at any one time, allowing us to be accountable for their safety’ said Ms. Critchley.
Further to knowing where their drivers are, Garden Grove have been able to increase safety by utilising the solution to improve driver behaviour. The Fleet Complete device uses accelerometer technology to determine things such as harsh braking, cornering and speeding. Garden Grove use this data to generate weekly reports in particular on speeding and then educate their drivers on the matter. This has resulted in improved driver behaviour, meaning a safer environment for the driver and improved wear and tear of their vehicles.
Added Benefits
For a company as recognisable as Garden Grove, public perception is an important part of business. The company was visited by the police department over public complaints surrounding the driving behaviour of some of their trucks.
‘Using the solution I was able to show the data to the police regarding the trucks in question, who were quickly able to admit that this was a case of the public not understanding heavy vehicle behaviour.’
In a separate issue, Garden Grove were able to help aid the police when one of their trucks was stolen.
‘Once we were advised the truck had been stolen, we were able to locate it via the tracking and inform them of its location. Unfortunately the police were unable to catch the thief at the time, but were able to get our truck back in one piece’ Ms. Critchley said.

Partnering with Fleet Complete has been a great decision on our part. It’s cost effective, has helped us be more efficient (on many levels), improved driver behaviour and it has ‘saved the day’ more than once!

Yarraville Club
Customer Success: Yarraville Club
Background
The Yarraville Club is a Not for Profit organisation in Yarraville, Victoria, founded in 1905 as a place to promote good fellowship and greater community connections. Since then, the Club has established itself as a family-friendly venue that offers dining and entertainment for members, guests and the local community. It has a strong focus on giving back to the local community through fundraising, events and services, including transportation.
Challenge
The Club owns courtesy vehicles which provide the community pick up services to and from the club or local school sporting events. They are also connected to the local RSL sub branch to transport former military personnel and their spouses as part of the community service.
The Yarraville community has faced some theft activity issues that targeted prestige vehicles by following them home, and then going back later in the evening, breaking into the house to steal the car.
“We needed a peace of mind if something did happen,” says Chris Byrne, CEO of the Yarraville Club.
“We can obviously trace the vehicle from an insurance perspective, because my car is insured as a prestige vehicle, but the insurer wanted higher level of security on the vehicle, and tracking was suggested, which they were keen for me to do.”
This is when Chris entered the Fleet Complete Facebook competition to win a 6-month free AT1 Asset Tracker device for the Yarraville Club – which he did!
The only caveat – AT1 is not meant for vehicles…so it was repurposed to look after a boat in storage, while Chris decided to invest in two Fleet Complete’s vehicle tracking devices. The GPS vehicle trackers were installed into the courtesy vehicles to keep track of them and provide a higher level of safety and security for the Club’s members and guests.

Safety and security is critical for members, guests and staff at the Yarraville Club
Solution
The Rollout
Chris was very happy with the implementation. The contract and the technicians were organised quickly to come out and install the equipment; it was a simple process of coordinating the vehicles to be in one spot at the scheduled time to have it all done at once. Minimal communication was required..
Training
Following the in-vehicle installation, Chris went through online training to learn about the Fleet Complete remote fleet management software.
“It was a 20 – 30 minute session over the phone, where they had their laptop open, I had my laptop open. We went through things to show me the basics of what we can do. Keep in mind, it’s not that we sit there every day, monitoring it. It’s what I call a “set and forget” type system. And the only time when we really log in and tap into it is if there’s an issue. A little bit like our security camera systems that we have throughout our facility. The only time you do use them is if there’s an issue you want an answer to.”
– Chris Byrne
Results
Keeping Multi-Driver Logs
Chris sees a lot of value in linking back to one database with vehicle data tracking and driver data logging to keep things in check. Having multiple drivers per vehicle, today he has full visibility over who is driving it, at what time, where they are heading and how fast.
“We can now monitor the speed of a vehicle, where the vehicle is going, if there are issues with the vehicle…So, if we have issues with speeding fines and those sorts of things coming in, we are able to link that all back from a database perspective.”
“If employee A was driving the vehicle down Jim Smith street at 4:42pm last Wednesday and got a speeding fine, but says ‘I didn’t do it’, we can say our records say you did’. At the same time, conversely, if the police were to book them at that speed, we could also go back to the police and say that our records say that they weren’t doing that speed.”
Now that the Club can oversee asset utilisation and driver performance with the Fleet Complete tracking software, it started to unravel other revenue generating opportunities for its fleet, as well as some fuel savings.
“We are looking at other vehicles in the fleet, in addition to our courtesy vehicles. We currently use Uber Eats and looking to potentially expand to have our own drivers do that, whilst also using them as courtesy vehicles.”
“Our fuel spend has decreased. Maybe, previously, drivers were driving here, there, and everywhere, just around town. Whereas now, they are actually just going to and from point A to point B”

Having visibility of high valued assets is critical for the Not for Profit organisation.
Safety & Peace of Mind
Overall, Chris is impressed with the technology and the ability to modernise his business. He recognises it as a protective and preventative measure for his assets and employees, as well as an assurance that his vehicles are properly utilised on a daily basis.
“We have a sign in the vehicle that says our vehicles are GPS tracked. We do that from a twofold perspective – so that our drivers are aware and also, if someone was thinking of stealing a vehicle, they are also aware. Like that old adage: Do you rob the house that has roller shutters and security cameras, or do you rob the house next door that doesn’t have them? And I take that view with motor vehicles as well, if you’ve got an extra layer of security over your vehicle, not saying that your vehicle won’t get stolen or robbed, but it’s less likely.”
“We’ve only got a small fleet, but it’s a system and a tool that has been quite beneficial to us and its more preventative. In the event there is an issue, we’ve got the resource and the ability to go back and check, and our insurers are very impressed that we’ve got it as well.”
– Chris Byrne
It’s really a safety and peace of mind thing: Knowing where our vehicles are; knowing that they are being driven properly; and it’s also a safety factor for the driver in the unlikely event that something happened. If a driver is in distress or stranded, we are able to track where they are.

City of Burnside
Customer Success: City of Burnside
Background
Founded in 1856, City of Burnside saves money and maintains vital infrastructure with Fleet Complete.
The City of Burnside is one of Adelaide’s oldest residential areas and is well known for its tree lined streets, period architecture, plentiful reserves and gardens within an area of 30 square kilometres.
Challenge
The City of Burnside’s challenge was to find a solution that had the ability for team leaders to locate any type of vehicle at any time. This included utes, sweepers, trucks, ride on mowers and rubbish trucks. Since the City of Burnside have installed this management solution technology they would not only be able to use the data to locate vehicles but the detailed information assists staff in the investigation of complaints. This was previously manually completed and hugely time consuming.

Solution
The City of Burnside now works smarter thanks to Fleet Complete’s Fleet Tracker solution + Driver ID and In Vehicle Duress solutions.
Application
The Fleet Complete solutions enabled the City of Burnside to:
Resolve Complaints
Data enabled the dismissal of a complaint (around speeding City of Burnside vehicles) that did not warrant any further action quickly, whereas in the past a lengthy investigation would have been undertaken as there would have be no way to prove that the complaint was incorrect.
Reduce Manual Handling
The technology and data reduces dramatically the number of hours previously generated to complete investigations and reporting.
Resolve Customer Complaints
Data collected via the Fleet Tracking Solution is now part of the council’s process to collate details and respond to the customer with accurate facts.
Achieved
Fleet Complete helped the City of Burnside to:
Reduce manual handling
GPS tracking data was analysed to demonstrate that tasks that should have been automated were being completed manually when they didn’t need to be (lifting of wheelie bins, truck versus man). Without the data they would never have had this knowledge, and would not have been able to work with staff to educate on the automation, why it was important, and that it would reduce the potential risk of injury and work safety by using the technology available.
Increase visibility and tracking
Overall improvement of vehicle tracking and recording who is driving/operating which vehicle at any one time. Identifying who was responsible and driving a vehicle when an infringement notice has been received is now seamless!
Enhance best practice
The installation of the In Vehicle Duress solution allows the City of Burnside to know immediately if anything has gone wrong on site especially for workers being on their own, working independently in remote areas. The safety and welfare of workers is of primary focus and Fleet Complete add value and an advantage to monitor staff welfare through this technology.

Mesh & Bar
Customer Success: Mesh & Bar
Background
Founded in 1998, Mesh & Bar Pty Ltd has since become one of Australia’s top manufacturers of reinforcing steel and mesh products. With offices in major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the team at Mesh & Bar are devoted to providing the highest quality services and materials. This includes the safe, convenient, and reliable delivery of products to customers. After struggling with incompetencies of other tracking systems, Mesh & Bar decided to try Fleet Complete’s Asset Tracker.
Challenge
Delivery is one of Mesh & Bar’s five key service offerings, with several options available to their customers. Over the course of 2017, after a few incidents, the company saw greater need to mitigate the potential loss or misplacement of steel fitment bins, along with the materials they were transporting.
“Potentially losing a fleet of bins is a considerable cost to the company,” said Damien Rickards, QLD Operations Manager for Mesh & Bar.
Not including the regular inspections that are already invested in the bins, the overall cost can amount to approximately $180,000 per 70 units.

Having exact locations of numerous bins was key for Mesh & Bar
Solution
Fleet Complete’s Asset Tracker offered Damien exactly what Mesh & Bar was looking for – a way to effectively and reliably track the location of their bins.
“GPS seemed the most logical choice. No other solutions were floated.”
In addition to GPS location tracking, the Asset Tracker provides unauthorised movement notifications, ensuring the safety of both the vehicles and the goods being transported.
The Rollout
Stressing that there were no issues implementing the solution, Damien found the system and the training process easy throughout onboarding.
“The customisable functionality within the software is excellent,” he says.
He was happy with Fleet Complete’s prompt response time and very pleased with the customer support, finding the team approachable and informative.
“The rollout process has been relatively simple. The software is intuitive and easy to navigate – it provides much more than initially anticipated, so we have decided to rollout to our fleet of trucks and other transport equipment”
Results
With the system exceeding the team’s expectations, Damien says, “I can already see that this is going to be the long-term sustainable solution.”
In fact, the Asset Tracker has provided Damien not only with the tracking system Mesh & Bar was originally looking for, but also the added benefit of measurable data on delivery times. Being able to provide customers with this information increases Mesh & Bar’s credibility and builds trust.
“Total flexibility of tracking. A cost-effective solution to our asset-tracking needs.”
“The geofence was a surprise feature – which I did not initially know about – that now allows us to run reports of exactly when we delivered to a site, how long and where we were held up for, and when we left, which has been of great benefit to our customers when it is time for them to assess their contractors.””
– Damien Rickards
Before fabricating any other new bins, we needed a way to protect our investments. Previous paper-based tracking and logging of these bins was not robust or sustainable.
